In sports on October 8, 2012 at 10:04 am

PXC, the region’s premier professional mixed martial arts promotion, has announced its biggest show to date to take place on November 17that the famous Araneta Coliseum in Manila, Philippines. Headlining the star-studded international fight card will be some of the best rising stars of MMA from the Philippines versus some of the best up-and-coming fighters from Hawaii, Guam, USA, & Japan. A long-awaited Title Fight between Erwin Tagle and the current PXC Flyweight Champion, Ale Cali, will be the Main Event. PXC-34 will also feature a Featherweight bout with veteran Harris Sarmiento taking on Mark Striegl, one of the top young MMA fighters in the Philippines, as well as a battle of undefeated Flyweights, as the explosive Jerome Wanawan takes on knock-out specialist Eugene Toquero. The event is expected to draw thousands of screaming MMA fans from all corners of the Philippines, and along with being broadcasted live nation-wide on AKTV via IBC13; PXC-34 will stream online for the world to experience as well!

Harris “The Hitman” Sarmiento (34-22), who also holds the PXC Lightweight Belt, is an extremely dangerous fighter at 145 pounds. He has fought at 4 different weight classes over his career against world-class fighters including Nick Diaz, Gilbert Melendes, and Max Holloway from the UFC & Strikeforce. His dominating performances in PXC over the last year put him back on the top of the rankings as one of the toughest pound-for-pound fighters in the region. Sarmiento resides and trains in Honolulu, Hawaii, with 808 Top Team, and is well-known as one of the best MMA fighters from the islands.

Sarmiento’s opponent, Mark “Mugen” Striegl, is a submission specialist who made his PXC debut with an impressive performance in September. Striegl is now 11-0, and trains with Fight Corps MMA in Baguio City. According to Striegl, “I’m very much looking forward to fighting Harris Sarmiento. Harris is a great fighter and this is going to be an explosive match-up. This is why I joined PXC, to fight guys that will drive me to be the best I can be.” After officiating his September bout in PXC-33, legendary MMA referee, Big John McCarthy, was quoted saying, “I wouldn’t be surprised if you saw Mark Striegl fighting in The UFC within a year.” Serious compliment from a serious MMA expert! Will this fight be a launching pad or a lesson for Striegl, or will Sarmiento prove that he deserves all the respect given to him, and perhaps another shot against some of the elite fighters of the world as a Featherweight?

Erwin Tagle is a local MMA star that has been instrumental in developing the sport in the Philippines. As head coach and trainer of Submission Sports Gym in Quezon City, Tagle has the support of his students and fans for this comeback to professional MMA. Since PXC launched in the Philippines, Tagle has been featured as a commentator and MMA expert on AKTV, but after witnessing Ale Cali’s performances defeating all 3 of his opponents on his way to winning the Flyweight Championship, Tagle decided to make his return to professional competition, and PXC match-makers immediately recognized his ability to be one of the top fighters from the Philippines, and gave him his title shot right away. “Erwin has paid his dues, and his reputation precedes him as a showman and excellent fighter. He absolutely deserves this opportunity, and we expect a great show,” said PXC VP/Match-Maker, Eli Monge.

Ale “The Young Gun” Cali has been one of the success stories of MMA in the Philippines. PXC’s Flyweight Champ was born to be a fighter. He started off as a boxer at the age of 10 and successfully won boxing gold medals for his city in Davao; 2002 and 2003 in the Mindanao Friendship Games in Cagayan de Oro City and Mati, Davao Oriental, respectively. He also bagged several medals in the Abap National Youth Open Championships.

Faced with financial instabilities, Cali later on looked to make a bold move to Mixed Martial Arts. In 2008, he began training Muay Thai and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. However, he failed his MMA debut but it never slowed him down as he won his 4 succeeding fights, eventually becoming the PXC’s Undisputed Flyweight Champion.

He was set to face Philippine MMA Legend, Erwin Tagle last September 1 but was sidelined due to injuries. Now, in a couple of weeks, he will get a chance once more to face his toughest opponent to date. “I am nervous yet extremely excited to be in the PXC cage with one of our country’s best fighters, Erwin Tagle,” Cali exclaimed.

The matchup between Wanawan and Toquero posts 2 undefeated Flyweights from 2 of the top gyms in the Philippines against each other. Wanawan represents Team Lakay for his second PXC bout, after putting on a show against Victor Torre in PXC-33, and Toquero, who trains alongside Erwin Tagle at Subsports, has displayed vicious elbow strikes during his first 3 knock-out performances in the PXC.

PXC is presented by San Mig Strong Ice and Sports 5. With special thanks to E-Games, Fitness First, FHM Philippines, FHM.com.ph, Premiere Condoms, Healthway Agility Phil, Beer Below Zero, Real Sports Radio, and Loqal.ph.

Mark Striegl: Up Close and Personal

In sports on September 9, 2012 at 12:12 pm

His name has now become a byword among MMA fanatics. So what’s with this Mugen Madness? Apart from being a warrior inside the octagon, displaying superb fighting stance, his boyish good looks could easily send many a girls’ hearts go Boom badoom boom boom badoom boom bass. A real knockout!
So let’s get to know PXC and MMA-ville’s Man of the Hour, Mark Striegl.

-Hello Mark! Wherever I go, people are talking about you, I’m pretty sure an endorsement deal is in the works and maybe a showbiz stint?

MS– Haha. Maybe they’re talking about another Mark? Later down the road I think an MMA musical would be a lot of fun ;P haha

-Why Mugen?

MS– “Mugen” is Japanese for limitless. During one of my early pro fights, I was asked by the promoter to provide a nickname…if I didn’t choose one, they would have chosen one for me. So rather than get stuck with something I didn’t like, I said “how about Mugen?” For all you anime fans out there…I was watching Samurai Champloo at the time. Ever since then it stuck.

-When did you realize that you wanted to become a fighter?

MS– Ever since I was young I wanted to be a professional athlete in some capacity in some sport. I didn’t think it would be MMA though.

-Who/what inspired you?

MS– Lots of fighters continue to inspire me. Growing up, I was inspired by many of the fighters of PRIDE Fighting Championship. I loved watching Fedor Emelianenko.

-Who are your heroes?

MS– Naruto Uzumaki and Baki the Grappler (;

-You compete in a fierce and brutal world of Mixed Martial Arts, do you get scared?

MS– I get a little anxious before fights. All fighters do. So much can happen in there.

-What’s your biggest fear?

MS– Regret.

-What do you consider as your biggest accomplishment so far?

MS– That’s hard to say but I’m definitely happy about what I’ve been able to accomplish in the cage and ring up to this point.

-What motivates you to be the best in your chosen field?

MS– My family and friends.

-Any advice you can give to aspiring fighters who want to follow your path/footsteps?

MS– Just go for it if this is what you want to do. You’ll never know until you try!

-Think you’re ripe for a title shot, do we hear it coming soon?

MS– I certainly hope so. I would love a shot at PXC gold. Every fighter out there wants a shot at the belt and I’m no different.

-Has fame changed Mark Striegl?

MS– Haha well, I don’t know if I’m really that famous to begin with. I still am the same person I’ve always been and my routine hasn’t changed at all.

Blind Justice

In Politics on May 29, 2012 at 12:45 pm

After 44 grueling days of trial and drama, the Senate impeachment court’s final verdict: The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court is found guilty as charged.I won’t go into the technicalities and legalities of the case for I have limited knowledge when it comes to court terminologies. When this case was brought about 5 months ago, many feared that a constitutional crisis looms in the horizon. The three branches of government namely Executive,Legislative and Judiciary are clashing. How can you put the highest law of the land on trial? Brief backgrounder, the Chief Justice has been accused of not declaring his true Statement of Asset,Liabilities and Net worth or SALN,stating that his net worth is roughly P3.4 million pesos in cash and properties. But after thorough investigations,he finally admitted that he has $2.4M and 80.7M pesos in savings,a far cry from the figures that were earlier submitted. It didn’t end there.Oral arguments ensued. Both the prosecution and the defense presented factual evidences and witnesses. And the popular vote was for the acquittal of the chief magistrate.Today,29th of May,marks a historic day for the Philippines.20 out of the 23 senator judges voted for the conviction of the Chief Justice on grounds of public deception and transparency issues. There was one instance and this was pounded upon by the jury as to why they came up with such a resolution.A lowly government employee was convicted for not declaring on her SALN a small market store under her name. This is where the blindfolded lady sets in. “Blind Justice is the theory that law should be viewed objectively with the determination of innocence or guilt made without bias or prejudice. It is the idea behind the motto “Equal Justice Under The Law” and is symbolized by the blindfolded statue of Lady Justice which is the symbol of the judiciary”.
In justice, there should be no race, gender or status. A victory for equality.

American Idol 2012 Season Finale

In entertainment on May 24, 2012 at 3:26 am

American Idol 2012 is finally over.American Phillip Phillips emerged as the season 11 winner. Kudos to the guy,he gave a fresh, crisp performance. And his charismatic presence on stage garnered him votes from the female viewers. As for 16-yr old Fil-Mex Jessica Sanchez, she was consistent all throughout the season. Give her any type of song, she’ll do justice to it. while Phillips is confined to country music. That duet with THE Jennifer Holliday’s simply mind-blowing. If that show-stopping performance can’t win competitions,I don’t know what else will. Phillip Phillips is a good performer but “no no no no way” can he beat Jessica, vocally speaking.
AND I AM TELLING YOU…Jessica Sanchez should have been the American Idol.

Oli Guacamole!

In Uncategorized on May 1, 2012 at 10:14 am

Feeling lethargic, literally dragged myself out of bed this morning.First of May or Labor Day holiday here in the Philippines.Unfortunately,it’s “Mayday Mayday!” to the unemployed. From a ho-humm to a humdinger of a day! Thanks to this email notification.

I’m pretty sure my shrieks jolted the whole neighborhood. Turns out that I posted something on his wall, and he liked it.So don’t fret if you still remain unnoticed even after you’ve decided to permanently reside on his FB wall, you’ll have your time. ;-p
To those who don’t recognize Oli (where have you been hibernating, geez!) well,he’s the traveller/host of Lonely Planet Six-Degrees China and Cash Cab Asia, just to name a few.
When I chanced upon a Lonely Planet episode featuring him,got so hooked that I would have gone amuck if anyone dared to snatch the remote control away from me. 😀 In my book,he’s the host with the most!. Oli Pettigrew transformed our Lonely Planet into a Lovely Planet and gave it a 360-degree turn. 🙂 More power and on your next Manila trip, the chicken adobo is on me. 😉
